Taking care of temporary crowns

Taking care of temporary crowns

Here’s how to take care of your temporary crown so it lasts until your next appointment
with the dentist.

Brush and floss gently, but stay away from electric toothbrushes.
While wearing a temporary dental crown, it’s crucial to continue brushing and flossing
your teeth. You should also gently clean the crown. To be kinder on your smile while
brushing your temporary crown, you may wish to return to using a manual toothbrush if
you often use an electric one.
Avoid foods that are tough, sticky, or hard.
Avoid eating anything that could knock your temporary dental crown off while it is in
place. These include items that are firm, sticky, or difficult, such as chewy gum, crunchy
breads, popcorn, nuts, raw vegetables or fruits, or sticky chocolates like caramel.
Tooth sensitivity after temporary crown may be minimized using desensitizing
toothpaste.
To lessen gum swelling or soreness, rinsing your mouth three times a day with warm
salt water will help.
The temporary crown and the gum tissue around it need to be properly cared for. Use a
gentle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to brush at least twice per day. To clean in
between the teeth and the temporary crown, use dental floss.
Eat items that won’t attach to your teeth, are difficult to chew, or will discolor your
temporary crown instead.
